Gillie’s Poem
Disability, a Social Issue
For those who walk with limbs, real or fake,Bending or folding, the world’s cruel to them. The body’s silent pain no words can take,Seen but unheard by those who judge with whim.
A person in a disabled space might park,Or use a toilet, though they need it not,And society looks past, seeing dark,Not knowing the struggles that others have got.
The heartbeat strong, though nights are filled with grief,Alone in darkness, suffering untold,But lifting up the mind brings sweet relief,A shared dignity, a strength to behold.
Let’s not judge by sight, but by heart’s true grace,For strength lies within, no matter the face.

Harmony Week
Last week, Strathmore Secondary College proudly celebrated our first-ever Harmony Week, recognising the strength and vibrancy that diversity brings to our school community. Throughout the week, students engaged in a variety of activities, including a whole-school Colour Run, the Map Our Community project, yoga sessions, and food stalls showcasing different cultures. These events not only created a fun and inclusive atmosphere but also helped raise substantial funds for Welcoming Australia, supporting their work in fostering belonging and inclusivity across the country.
A huge thank you to our incredible student leaders, whose dedication and hard work made these events possible. Their leadership ensured that Harmony Week was more than just a celebration—it was a meaningful opportunity for our school to come together, learn from one another, and embrace the rich diversity that makes our community stronger.

Art Creative Practice
Our Year 11 and 12 Art Creative Practice students recently visited the Top Arts exhibition at the NGV Ian Potter Centre, where they explored outstanding student artworks and gained insights into the art-making process. The curator’s introduction sparked engaging discussions, with students analysing the works and exploring Visual Diaries from the exhibitors.
The day concluded with a visit to either the Kusama exhibition at NGV, the free collection, or The Charge That Binds at ACCA, further inspiring students in their own creative practices.
The VCE Art teachers would like to thank the students for representing our school with pride. Their thoughtful engagement with the NGV curators during our talk demonstrated their dedication, passion for art, and commitment to both their studies and their own creative practice.

Exploring Computers and Technology: Helping Others Learn
In today’s world, we use computers and digital technologies every single day. But have you ever stopped to think about what computers really are and how we can use them to get tasks done faster and more efficiently?
This term, Year 7 students have been diving deep into these questions, exploring the key components of computers, including hardware and software, as well as networks, the internet, and both mobile and desktop operating systems. It’s been an exciting journey where we've uncovered how these technologies work and how we can harness them to improve our everyday tasks.
However, not all Year 7 students have the chance to study digital technology, which is where our collaborative project comes in. To share our knowledge, students worked in small groups to create resources aimed at helping those who missed out on these important lessons. The goal? To teach their peers some essential keyboard shortcuts, tricks and tips to boost productivity and make class and homework tasks more effective and efficient.
The final result? A fantastic range of resources, including:

- Short films explaining key concepts
- Podcasts that break down useful tech tips
- Google Docs filled with step-by-step guides
- Animated PowerPoint presentations to visually explain complex ideas
- Posters with quick-reference tips and tricks
Through these creative projects, Year 7 students not only learned about digital technology but also helped others to become more confident and efficient with their devices. It’s been a fun, hands-on way to pass on the skills that will help everyone succeed in the digital age.
Yayoi Kusama Exhibition
On Tuesday the 2nd of April, Year 11 and 12 Japanese students went on an excursion to the Yayoi Kusama exhibition at the NGV.
Students were able to immerse themselves into Kusama’s unique world of bright colours, polka dots and pumpkins! These distinctive designs spark inspiration, and provide an interesting topic of conversation within the Japanese classroom.
We were able to learn about her life story, and get to know more about why she creates the one-of-a-kind artworks that she does. This allowed the Japanese students to immerse themselves into rich Japanese culture and history.

Year 7 STEAM
This semester, Year 7 STEAM students have been investigating the concepts of food security and sustainability. As part of their current assessment, students are designing an Urban Farm, based on sustainable agricultural practices in an urban setting, with the goal of developing strategies to feed an ever-growing population.
Students made a prototype of their urban farm designs using Lego, and are currently completing their finalised designs using Minecraft. They've really stepped up to the challenge, coming up with creative solutions that could allow for large scale food production within cities. Some concepts that have come up in their designs include hydroponics, aquaponics, polyculture and more!
Next term we are off to La Trobe University to explore some cutting edge AgriTech, to further extend our ideas.

Outdoor & Enviromental Studies
Year 12 Anglesea Camp
The Year 12 Outdoor & Environmental Studies class recently participated in a camp to Anglesea. The students had an incredible experience, enjoying perfect weather and engaging in a range of outdoor activities that challenged and inspired them.
Camp Highlights:
Camp Highlights:
- Hike to Big Rock at the You Yangs: Students took on the rugged terrain of the You Yangs, exploring unique granite peaks and enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. It was a great opportunity to discuss Wathaurong history in the area, learn about cultural sites and land management strategies while embracing the challenge of the hike.
- Hike in the Anglesea Heath: This hike provided an immersive experience in one of Victoria’s most diverse ecosystems. Students observed native flora and fauna while learning about conservation efforts in the region.
- Stand Up Paddleboarding on the Anglesea River: The calm waters of the Anglesea River made for a fantastic stand-up paddleboarding session, where students improved their balance, coordination, and confidence on the water.
- Snorkelling at Point Roadknight: With excellent conditions, students explored the vibrant marine life beneath the surface at Point Roadknight. This activity highlighted the importance of marine conservation and offered a hands-on experience with Victoria’s coastal environment.
Throughout the camp, students demonstrated great enthusiasm, teamwork, and resilience. Their engagement with the natural world and willingness to step outside their comfort zones made for an enriching learning experience.

Year 10 Anglesea Camp
The VCE Outdoor Environmental Studies class at our school, consisting of Year 10 students undertaking an accelerated VCE Unit 1 subject, recently went on a three-day camp to Anglesea from 26/3 to 28/3 to explore and study the local environment. On Wednesday, they visited Bells Beach to check out the waves and learn about the different biomes within this environment. They then headed to the caravan park to set up their tents and the communal camp cooking area. The students also headed to Anglesea beach and had a fun time playing beach games, followed by cooking up their dinner on a Trangia.
On Thursday they woke up and watched the beautiful sunrise on the beach, followed by breakfast. The students started the day by visiting Point Addis, immersing themselves in the local Indigenous culture and learning about the Wadawurrung Peoples history and connection to Country. The students then made their way to Anglesea River to do some canoeing and learn about the inland waterways in Anglesea.
On Friday the students enjoyed surfing in the morning before packing up and heading back to school. The camp was a great success, with students gaining valuable insights and knowledge about the environment and having heaps of fun with each other. Miss Rigden and Mr Michaelis were impressed by the enthusiasm and participation of all the Year 10 students and were delighted to see them engaging in outdoor activities, while learning about the environment.
We are looking forward to the next camp.

Year 9 Visual Communication Design
Students explored the 3D drawing method of Isometric and were asked to design a brand new character for the game Crossy Road. The characters had to appeal to a younger audience and incorporate elements of road safety.
Enjoy some examples of their wonderful work below.
Student Attendance
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we come to the end of Term 1, we ask you to take a few moments to review your child’s attendance record on Compass.
If your child has unexplained absences, please ensure you explain these by adding an attendance note. You can select multiple absences at once and add a note to explain the absence, which makes the process quick and easy.
Please contact the Junior School Attendance Officer if you require assistance.
