Year 10 Jewellery Design
This term students were introduced to lost wax casting method, and working with the manufacturing industry to produce their designs. They experimented with the properties of different wax types before coming up with a design to fit their ring size. Students had to convert the weight of their wax into sterling silver to ensure their designs came in under budget.
“First I had to carve my ring out from the blue wax. I had to make sure my engravings are precise and deep enough, make sure all edges were round and tidy also keeping in mind all scratches aren’t visible and filed away because when the ring gets turned into silver all imperfections will show up when cast. My ring was taken to the casting house and they used the lost wax method to turn my ring into sterling silver, after that all I had to do was file down and polish it.” - Sienna P

Burnet Bulletin
Happy last day for 2024 Burnet.
While very shortly we will all get our chance to put our feet up and schoolbooks down, our Year 10 students got a bit of a head start. The Yr 10 Graduation at SSC was a wonderful way for us as a team to celebrate with our parent community and reflect on a massive four years in the junior Burnet team. It was a real pleasure to be able to recognise their successes and wish them all the best as they move into the senior school or on to their next educational pursuit. It’s always an emotional goodbye to farewell our Yr 10 students, but they’re in great hands with their senior Burnet coordinator Ben Hirons, and Yr 11 team leader Kenna Bradley eager to welcome them to the senior school.
Last week the Burnet junior cohort came together to celebrate the accomplishments of the year. This gathering provided a wonderful opportunity to say goodbye to our students before the break and to highlight the many successes and achievements of 2024.
We took the time to recognise our peer mentors, and, of course, our official award winners. A heartfelt congratulations to all Burnet students for an outstanding year. Your hard work and commitment have truly made a difference, and we are proud of each one of you. Official Award Winners
We also welcomed our junior Burnet leadership team for 2025 at our final team assembly. We are looking forward to working with our leaders and ensuring there’s a strong student voice in the team for 2024.

We are thrilled to announce that Burnet has had an incredible year in sport with several of our talented students being recognised for their outstanding efforts in their chosen sports.
A huge congratulations goes out to Owen Veltman, who has made us all proud by becoming the 400m national champion. Owen not only won the gold medal at the Australian All Schools Championships but also set a personal best and a club record with an impressive time of 50.47 seconds. In addition to his success in the 400m, Owen has also excelled in the 100m and 200m events at recent state championships. This remarkable achievement is just the beginning for Owen, and we can’t wait to see what he accomplishes next.
The Burnet team would like to bid farewell to James Cassin, who has been our primary wellbeing support person this year. His work with our students and families has been invaluable, and we deeply appreciate his support and advice. Thank you, James, for all that you have contributed to the Burnet team.
We are also thrilled to welcome Butho Ncube to the Burnet team. Butho will be working with our young people in the coming year, and we look forward to the positive influence he will bring to our school community.
We want to take a moment to extend our heartfelt farewell to Matt Roberts. We are incredibly grateful for his years of dedicated service to our students and families. Matt, your commitment has made a lasting impact, and you will be greatly missed by everyone in our community. We wish you all the best in your new role!
At the same time, we are excited to welcome some new faces to our team for the upcoming year. The Burnet Team structure is as follows:
Erica Trahar - Team LeaderGiorgia De Filippis - Year 9/10

We are excited to work with all of you next year.
Finally, a massive thank you to our Burnet community. It’s been a big year. Our students have persevered through some long terms and have earned this summer break. We hope the sun comes out for you all and you get to spend some quality time together with those that mean the most to you.
Until next year, be safe and look after one another.

Wilsons Promontory VCE OES Camp
The Outdoor and Environmental Studies class recently completed a four-day hiking camp at Wilsons Promontory National Park. The students had been preparing for this trip all year, learning essential skills such as packing a backpack, cooking on a Trangia stove, setting up camp, risk management, first aid and peer- leading the hikes, in addition to many more skills.
On the first day, the class set up camp together at Tidal River and spent the afternoon enjoying the glorious sunshine at Norman Beach, playing beach games such as spike ball, cricket and soccer. On day two, the group split into two to begin the hike. Each student carried everything they needed, including clothing, tents, cooking gear, and food. They also shared group equipment such as tarps, fuel bottles, and ropes. Group 1 hiked from Telegraph Saddle to camp at Halfway Hut (7.4 km – 3 hours), while Group 2 walked from Tidal River to camp at Oberon Bay (7.6 km – 3 hours).
On day three, both groups packed up their campsites and met at Telegraph Junction to embark on a return trip to Waterloo Bay (9.4 km return – 4 hours), one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia. That evening, the groups swapped campsites.
On the final day, Group 1 hiked from Oberon Bay to Tidal River (7.6 km – 3 hours), while Group 2 walked from Halfway Hut to Telegraph Saddle (7.4 km – 3 hours). Despite encountering rain and challenging terrain, all students and teacher showed remarkable resilience throughout the entire trip.
We would like to extend our gratitude to the teachers who came, Erica Trahar, Leon Crook, and Yasmin Welsford for accompanying us and contributing to making this an enjoyable and memorable experience.
I would also like to congratulate all the students for a fantastic year together. We were fortunate to conclude our year as a class in such an incredible national park, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Best wishes to all the students for next year and in their future outdoor adventures.
Miss RigdenYear 10 Sculpture and Ceramics have began researching and learning about different sculptors and the endless possibilities of materials they can use in making their 3D art.
This week we looked at Andy Goldsworthy and headed out to the oval to make ephemeral land art sculptures focusing on the art elements of line, shape and colour.

Year 8 Art: Real and Unreal
Sculptural Self Portrait
Students created unique abstracted self-portrait sculptures that utilised knowledge of forms and materials. Each represented their personal history, personality and interests, using symbolism as a means of communication.
The plywood structures incorporated additional materials and enabled students to learn relevant construction skills to solve design ideas. To complete the task, each sculpture was accompanied by a didactic text panel, with the title of the artwork, some information about the symbolism presented and the means by which it was created. This reinforced the breadth of the artistic process, and linked with student experiences during a gallery visit this term.

Rising Robots: Real-World Solutions in the making!
Year 8 Digital Technology students are concluding the year with an engaging exploration of robotics. Drawing on their programming experience from a Python-based text adventure game unit, students have embraced the opportunity to dive deeper into the world of robotics. The unit began with a study of the history and evolution of robotics, including the origins of the first-ever robot.
Students have since advanced to working with Strathmore’s new set of LEGO Spike Prime kits, building and programming a variety of innovative robots. Pictured here are proud young engineers competing in a robot race, with designs focused on distance, speed, and, in some cases, strategic sabotage! The next challenge: to design and construct a unique robot aimed at addressing a real-world need or problem within our local school community.
Perhaps we have some future contenders for next year’s Strathmore Shockwaves, poised to compete in the prestigious FIRST LEGO League Challenge!

Year 8 STEAM
This semester in STEAM, students have been exploring the big idea question of how we can utilise technology to track the effects of climate change on ocean ecosystems.
The Year 8s have put their construction skills to the test by making an underwater rover! Students were then given the opportunity to test their ROVs at Coburg Lake Reserve.
Well done STEAM students on a highly reflective term! Excellent ideas were discussed, and creative solutions were presented.
