Year 7’s: Zoey Steer, Sadie Cottom, Olivia Goldstein, Myah Hesketh, Emmerson Johansen, Mackenzie Felmingham, Willow Ciantar, Maeve Rashid, Ella Brown, Jazz Lee, Olivia Ziogas and Zahra Sheehan.
Match SummaryThe game was played on Tuesday 29th August at La Trobe University, Tony Sheean Oval. The girls started off by showcasing a fantastic warm up, in front of a crowd of many supportive friends and family who came to watch.
First QuarterDaniela Curtis, our captain, won the coin toss picking to kick with wind to ensure we could use it to our advantage... and that we did! The girls kicked four goals and four behinds, keeping Wodonga scoreless at quarter time. The girls demonstrated their impressive pressure, relentless determination, and unwavering effort from the get-go. The score after the first quarter was Strathmore 4.4.28 and Wodonga 0.0.0.
Second QuarterThis quarter we were kicking against the wind, which we knew would be more difficult. At quarter time we spoke about strategies as a team to combat this challenge and the girls showed an outstanding ability to push up the ground, stay tight with their defender and have a bit of run and carry. The girls managed to kick the first goal into the wind, followed by Wodonga kicking their first, bring the scores at half time to Strathmore 5.4.34 and Wodonga 1.3.9.
Third QuarterAfter a rest and re-gather at half time, speaking about what we wanted to keep working on, the girls came out flying! Showing off their excellent skills and team work to keep the footy in our 50. The girls kicked six goals in this quarter, demonstrating their hunger for victory! At no stage did the team take their foot off the pedal and kept pushing to three quarter time. The score at three quarter time was Strathmore 11.5.71 and Wodonga 1.3.9.
Fourth QuarterIn the last quarter the team was restructured to get several players in some different positions. This was a great opportunity for the girls to contribute in areas they had not played in before. Trying to score against the wind and a restructure of positions made it difficult to find the goals however, Wodonga showed a fantastic never give up attitude and managed to kick five goals in this last quarter. The Strathmore girls kept fighting all the way to the final siren, where they all ran together on the field, cheering and hugging to celebrate their victory! The final scores were Strathmore 11.6.72 and Wodonga 6.5.41. Goal Kickers:Myah Hesketh: 7 goals, Olivia Goldstein: 2 goals, Holly Clough: 1 goal and Ella Mozjerin: 1 goal.
Special Mentions:Best on Ground: Hollie Capuano's performance on the field was nothing short of exceptional. Exemplifying true grit and determination. It was only after enduring two painful calf cramps, which led her to collapse and unable to walk, that she finally exited the field. Hollie's unwavering spirit, resilience and never give up attitude to the team truly earned her the title of "Best on Ground."
Standout Performers: Myah Hesketh, Olivia Goldstein, Daniela Curtis, Willow Ciantar, Holly Clough, Jazz Lee and Zoey Steer.
I cannot express enough how proud I am to coach this fantastic group of girls. Their unwavering performance, consistent effort, resilience and perseverance have not only brought them to the State Final but also defeated many well-known Sports Football Academy Schools including Maribyrnong College, Western Heights College and Diamond Valley College. There are approximately 500 schools in the competition and Strathmore Secondary College Junior Girls Team 2023 have taken out the State Title!
Congratulations to our young champions on this monumental win! Let's continue to support them and celebrate this fantastic achievement.

Music Camp
For all the lucky students who embarked on music camp this year, it was a blast - Think of an epic mixtape of music notes, Uno and laughs.
The daily activities were action packed, yet had ample time for rest and snacking, provided by the accommodating staff at Rutherford Park Country Retreat. Sessions of ensemble practice occurred daily for the wide range of musical talent at SSC, including a Concert band, Guitar orchestra, Choir, Chamber orchestra, and many other small group projects.
The evenings were no less exciting, featuring a high-octane dance rendition of ‘Nutbush City Limits’ and a student-led redfaces competition, before a long night of games and trivia. The final day ended off with a bang, as all the ensembles gathered in the stage room to impress each other with their performances. The energy was carried the whole bus ride home, at least by those who were still awake, and overall was a really positive experience to remember.
However, these great times would not be possible without the amazing teachers that gave up their time (and sleep), so a big thank you goes out to them, particularly our beloved performing arts coordinator Stew, who embodies the spirit and fun of us all.

Senior Art Exhibition XXV
This year we celebrated our 25th annual exhibition of senior artwork, from years 10, 11 and 12. It is a fine tradition that enables students to select and show their own work outside the confines of the college walls. Neon Parlour, in High Street Northcote, yet again hosted the exhibition, providing a wonderful opportunity for our young artists. Thirty students participated, showing a wide variety of subject matter, style and materials and techniques in their creative practice.
The exhibition was bumped in on the Tuesday afternoon before the show opened, with 5 students (Cady Jacobson, Micaela Xerri, Zahlia Fergie, Aniya Moin and Sophia Walker) assisting teachers to display the artworks. This is important experience for any artist: how best to present not only their work but to learn the mechanics of installation. Artwork on the poster and invitation featured a painting by Mikaela Xerri.
Many gathered for the Celebration Night on Friday 25 August: the artists, their parents and friends, teachers, past students and other invited guests mingled excitedly, enjoying the artworks and the company.
The speeches highlighted the place of art in life, and how studying Art can, apart from a career as a working artist, lead to the important role of teaching. Helen Kostiuk, who has been involved with the exhibition since its inception 28 years ago (COVID broke our run) spoke of the way art featured in both her personal and professional life. “Curiosity leads you everywhere”, she said. To our delight, Joanne Carvalho (neé Siatos), a past student of Strathmore SC and alumnus of the exhibition, also spoke about her journey in art, from her time at Strathmore in the art room and the darkroom, choosing to study photography at tertiary level and starting her own business in it, and eventually becoming a teacher. Joanne is currently teaching in the Art Department at Gladstone Park Secondary College. Both teachers spoke of their love of art and of helping students reach their potential in their study of it.
It was a very happy night, with the added bonus for some students that their artwork was sold. Musical entertainment (and enchantment) was provided by singers, Mariana Olivier Hernandez and Scarlett Finlayson and guitarist, Joshua Frank, all in Yea r12.
The weekend provided a chance for those unable to attend on Friday, or just seeking a quieter environment to peruse the artworks at leisure.
Congratulations to all students participating: they were brave to put their work into the public arena. Thank you to their families for supporting them, and to everyone who helped make this year’s exhibition possible. We look forward to welcoming you all again next year, as artists or visitors.

Year 7 Design and Technology
In Year 7 design tech we have been constructing our own salad servers. At the start we had to sketch out a bunch of ideas on a sheet of paper. Then we chose our favorite design, then we marked out our design on veneer wood which we made via laminating with glue. Then we started cutting out our design. Once we finished cutting out we filled down our design to make it smooth and used the belt sander and bobbin sander to help smooth over the edges.
