Mid-Term Update
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we reach the midpoint of Term 4, we wanted to share some highlights and reminders as we look forward to the rest of the term.
Firstly, congratulations to our VCE students, who are nearly finished with their final exams. Their hard work and dedication over the past months have been truly commendable, and we wish them every success as they complete this important chapter of their school journey.
Our Year 9 students recently participated in the Naarm Program, held from the 6th to the 8th of November in Melbourne’s CBD. This was a fantastic opportunity for them to engage with the rich history and culture of the city, and we’re pleased to report that the program was a great success, with students gaining valuable insights and experiences.
With warmer weather approaching, we would like to remind everyone of the college’s uniform policy. Please ensure students adhere to the uniform guidelines.
Finally, as the term draws to a close, we’re excited for some upcoming end-of-term activities. One highlight will be the annual Picnic Day at Funfields on the 13th of December, offering a fun and well-deserved break for students and staff alike. The upcoming Creative Arts Day on 24th November also promises to highlight some outstanding student work and achievement.
Thank you for your ongoing support and engagement. We look forward to a successful and enjoyable conclusion to the school year.
Warm regards, Vanessa Pratt & Michael PakakisActing Principals

Year 10 Food Technology
The Year 11 Food studies students have just completed a unit on the science of food. The students were able to use both bicarbonate of soda and eggs to aerate a popular old-fashioned biscuit. These ingredients contributed to the spread of the biscuit, flavour and colour development when cooked.
The butter, sugar and golden syrup in these biscuits mean that they are high in fat and sugar, so should only be eaten occasionally and in small amounts. They were a perfect last class celebration food to share with their family and friends.
Well done year 11.

Student Attendance
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we approach the end of Term 4, we ask you to take a few moments to review your child’s Attendance record on Compass.
If your child has unexplained absences, please ensure you explain these by adding an Attendance note. You can select multiple absences at once and add a note to explain the absence, which makes the process quick and easy.
Please contact the Junior School Attendance Officer if you require assistance.

Growing Up
The English faculty proudly presents the second edition of the 'Growing Up' anthology, a collection of Year 10 English short stories. The collection features ten moving short stories written by students that were selected by their teachers. The stories explore the themes of identity, belonging, generational differences, and prejudice.
Printed copies of the anthology are available in the school library for students to read and share.
Additionally, the English faculty has awarded two Year 10 students for their participation in the creative response:
• Excellence Award: Sophia Frank (Chisholm)• Perseverance Award: Hamish Fitzpatrick (Chisholm)
These two students will receive a Readings bookstore voucher at their end-of-year graduation.
Well done to both our winners and all those who contributed to the anthology.

Year 10 Food Technology
The Year 10 Food Technology students have just completed a unit on meat.
The unit focused on the different cuts of meat and the students were able to experiment with different cooking methods needed based on their structure. The students were also able to compare the similarities and differences between meat and plant-based alternatives. They concluded the unit by incorporating both the design process, learned from previous years and the new knowledge on meat. The students designed, produce and evaluate a meal using minced meat.
There were some creative designs and modifications made to family favourite dishes.

Naarm
Congratulations to all the Year 9s who participated in the Naarm Program this year!
Last week, our Year 9 students spent three days in the city, engaging in a variety of exciting learning experiences.
On Day 1, students participated in the workshops hosted by Salvos Schools, Melbourne City Mission and The Big Issue. As part of their Acts of Kindness activity, students worked in small teams to create care packs, which were later donated to the Salvation Army. The Salvos team greatly appreciated the donation, and we were incredibly impressed by the students' integrity, teamwork, and dedication throughout the day.
On Day 2, students challenged themselves by independently navigating the city to attend their morning and afternoon electives. Activities included Escape Rooms, Rock climbing, tours of the Old Melbourne Gaol, Eureka Skydeck, MCG and Art VO. Those who went on the MCG tour were lucky to also experience the Australia A vs. India A cricket match!
On Day 3, after an energy-boosting breakfast of doughnuts students continued to work together on various challenges in the Amazing Race, demonstrating resilience and strong collaboration skills. The race featured a variety of attractions, including MelbHenge, Ned Kelly's armour, Lion dancers, Oracles, Bees, Kylie Minogue, and coconuts. Congratulations to the 2024 Amazing Race winners - Hollie C, Naomi C, Jonathan C, Savain CM, Christopher K and Elias C - who completed the race in an epic 1hr and 55min!!!
Throughout the program, our Year 9s faced challenges with enthusiasm, teamwork, and integrity. We are proud of everything they accomplished and the positive impact they made in the community.

Year 8 Science
This term the year 8 students have been learning about sound waves in their Science classes. As part of the assessment for the term, the students were required to make a musical instrument of their choice and test how different factors affected the sound their instrument made. The students then related this back to their knowledge of sound waves.
Well done to the year 8 students for the effort and creativity they put into their work!

Liceo Galvani
Last month, Strathmore Secondary College welcomed a group of students and teachers from Liceo Galvani in Bologna as part of our ongoing reciprocal exchange program. This visit followed a successful trip by our students to Italy in March/April this year.
During their two weeks stay, our guests from Bologna took part in a full schedule, including sessions in VSSEC, various excursions such as day trips to Phillip Island and the Great Ocean Road, and classes with their host siblings. They found the hands-on chemistry sessions and the Mission to Mars experience in VSSEC particularly interesting. Feeding the kangaroos at Maru Park was another memorable highlight. Students also enjoyed spending time with their host families and experiencing everyday life in an Australian family.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the parents who generously offered to host a student from Bologna. Your support is essential to the success of this program.
