Year 10 Work Experience
Nine SSC participated in a Work Experience program held at VSSEC.
During the work experience, we completed a radio astronomy program using the VSSEC remote radio telescope in Tallarook, Victoria. Throughout the week we learned how to use the 2 different astronomy grids to locate our objects and point the telescope while also determining when it was actually visible. We tracked several objects, my one being the Tarantula Nebula, the brightest star forming region in our local cluster of galaxies, 159,800 light years away from us sitting in a large dust cloud.
Another object we tracked was the Orion Nebula 56.2 million light years away, we decided to do this to test how far we could measure the radio frequency and ended up picking up a portion of presumably the top right corner.
Our favourite object was ctb-31 a supernova remnant that gave a really cool and clear reading that showed the entire object (pictured below).

Year 12 Biology Excursion
On Tuesday 16th July, year 12 Biology students went on an excursion to Melbourne University.
We visited the School of BioSciences and participated in a laboratory workshop as part of Unit 4 studies.
Students completed two activities: First they investigated the evidence for evolutionary change in Drosophila melanogaster and the second activity was examining immunity using influenza as a case study.
The excursion provided students with a hands on experience with modern scientific techniques and an opportunity to use laboratory equipment that we do not have at school. Throughout the session, students had the chance to ask questions of the laboratory staff and university demonstrators, gaining a valuable experience in what a practical laboratory class would be like at university.
All students worked extremely well, showing enthusiasm and engagement during the excursion.

Burnet Bulletin
Good afternoon students, parents, carers and community of our Burnet students. Welcome back from a well-deserved break. We hope that you were able to relax, refresh and are ready to go for semester two.
By now, all reports for Years 7 – 10 have been published and are available to view on Compass. We hope that you’ve been able to review those reports, celebrate successes and discuss some focuses and goals for semester two. In the Burnet office, we’re beginning our semester with a focus on punctuality and preparedness. We’ll be keeping a close eye on attendance data and reminding students that preparedness means being in full school uniform, with all necessary resources to participate in every lesson. Please support us by making sure your students are arriving to school on time in their uniforms – hoodies are not part of the uniform.
Congratulations to our Burnet students who were involved in the State Cross Country Championships, in particular the students in the 16 years girls team Stephanie Ripplinger (12th), and Estelle Sacco (26th). We’re looking forward to seeing our Junior athletes compete at next week’s Athletics Carnival – remember to wear your purple team colours on the day!
It’s a big term for Burnet students with 2025 Course Selections, the Athletics Carnival, Music Camp, Zoo Excursions, Jazz Night and a host of events in between. As always, keep your eye on Compass for event details and get in touch with the Burnet office if you have any questions.
Welcome back!

Japan Study Tour: An Unforgettable Journey
Over the school holidays, 15 excited students and 3 dedicated staff members embarked on the college's first Japan study tour in 6 years.
This journey began with the bustling energy of Tokyo, where our students immersed themselves in a variety of hands-on experiences. From crafting realistic wax food samples to participating in an earthquake and fire safety demonstration, the adventure was both educational and thrilling. Exploring Tokyo’s vibrant neighbourhoods added to the excitement, offering endless discoveries.
The journey then took a serene turn as our group travelled to Akaigawa, Hokkaido, home to our sister school. With a population of just 2,000 residents, Akaigawa presented a stark yet beautiful contrast to the metropolis of Tokyo. Here, students experienced the tranquil charm of the Japanese countryside, putting their language skills to the test in real-life situations and ingraining themselves in daily Japanese life.
As our visit came to an end, there wasn't a dry eye as we bid farewell to our new friends. We are now eagerly looking forward to welcoming them to Melbourne in just a few weeks.

Banksy – The World Without Limits
This week, students from the Visual Arts had the incredible opportunity to visit the ‘Banksy- The World Without Limits’ exhibition.
The day was filled with excitement and wonder as we explored the thought-provoking works of the mysterious street artist. From powerful political statements to whimsical art pieces, every exhibit sparked conversation and reflection. Our students not only enjoyed the visual feast, but also engaged in meaningful discussions about the role of art in society. It was truly a memorable day that left everyone inspired and eager to learn more about Banksy and contemporary art.
Thank you to all those involved to make this event happen. Nicholas Mastrippolito & The Arts Team

Year 12 Food Technology
The Year 12s created the Indian meal of Dhal. The aim this week was to create a high protein meal that was vegetarian.
Most students had not tried Dhal before, however commented that they really enjoyed the rich spices paired with the silkiness of the coconut cream!

Changes to School Bus Route 3200
Please see information received on behalf of Kinetic, bus operator of PT route 512 and school route 3200, operating to/from Moreland Station – Strathmore Secondary College. They would like to notify you of an upcoming route path change, affecting school route 3200, which will take affect from 29 of July. The route currently traverses Queen Street in Coburg, which is a narrow residential street that has cars parked up and down both sides of it for most of the day. This causes very tight manoeuvres to be made to avoid oncoming traffic if any approaches. The route will be altered to run via Melville Road instead, which is a major corridor and much more suitable for heavy vehicles. This would result in two stops on Reynard St being no longer serviced by this route. School students wishing to use these stops can utilise the route 512 instead, which also services Strathmore Secondary College. The change will apply to both the AM and PM service. Please see attachments that show a map of the changes for the current route, new route (as of July 29, 2024) and affected area zoomed in (Legend: grey-current route, red-new route as of July 29).
