Message from the Principal
As is usually the case, Semester 1 has flown by, and winter is upon us. The days are short and the weather chilly. I am very proud of our students and their achievements this year no matter what their strengths or challenges. The Mid-Year Concert was, as we have come to expect, outstanding. A first-time audience member who attended the concert on Tuesday evening was thoroughly impressed by both the variety and comprehensiveness of the program, and the adventurous choice of musical styles. I add my congratulations to all who contributed and my appreciation of the dedication and hard work of the Music Faculty members.
I wish all members of the College community a satisfying, energising and safe break. I look forward to welcoming our students back for Term 3 on 15 July.

Year 9 Japanese
On the 17th of June Year 9 Japanese students visited the Consulate General of Japan and Daiso (a Japanese store) before going to Miyako for a bento lunch. At Daiso, we got to shop and buy Japanese goods.
Afterwards, we walked to the Consulate General. Our class learnt about school life and after school life in Japan. It was a very educational experience. We learnt about school subjects, uniforms, after school clubs and activities, along with a quiz halfway through.
After the Consulate, we walked to Miyako for a Japanese bento lunch which consisted of meat (fish or vegetable), tempura (fried vegetables), salad, sashimi, miso soup and rice. We then took the train back to Strathmore Station with the other Japanese class.

Japanese Student Host Families
We are looking for host families for visiting Japanese students.
A group of Year 8 Japanese students are visiting our college in early August. We are currently seeking for host families for the following dates, Wednesday 7th August (arriving afterschool) to Monday 12th August (leaving around lunch time).
Your child does not have to currently be studying Japanese to host. This is a valuable opportunity for all students to participate in cultural exchange. If you are interested in this opportunity to have a Japanese student at your house, please contact: mamiko.shimizu@education.vic.gov.au

Year 9 Design & Technology
This semester has seen our year 9 students construct small timber boxes in response to their ‘small box design’ brief.
Students have learnt valuable skills in timber joinery, design thinking, orthographic drawing and finishings. Introduced to complex timber joinery, our Year 9s successfully completed box pin and housing joints to achieve high quality final products. Students developed skills in Adobe Illustrator to design a lid suited to their end user.

Chisholm BBQ
On Wednesday the 19th of June, Chisholm Junior Team held a BBQ. It was a fun team-building event and we were thankfully lucky with the weather.
With over 400 sausages to cook, this was no small barbequing feat. We also cooked some veggie burgers (but they were popular with Ms Milton and no one else).
A huge thank to all the Chisholm Year 7, 8, 9 and 10s who attended and brought along positive vibes. Shout out to our cooks and service volunteers: David Moussa, who absolutely starred in his security/maître de role; Bianca Zacchei, Youssef Taha, Cara Tsionis, Isabella Giordano and Serah Tangi who were masters of the grill; and Josh Barrett, Billy Salem and Aston Radecki for some speedy and professional prepping. And to Patrick Leyden- master of the mustard- and Hamish Fitzpatrick - who showed up late but was invaluable nonetheless.

Plain English Speaking Award 2024
Plain English Speaking Award (PESA) is a public-speaking competition for students aged 15-18 years. It provides an excellent opportunity for students to build self-confidence and extend their skills in oral communication, speech writing and research. On 24th May, two of our students, Bonnie Green and Willow Rodwell, participated in the first round of speeches at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School. Bonnie made it to the semi-finals and was invited to participate in the PESA competition at VCAA, Two Treasury Place. Her topic was “The financial and social benefits of women’s economic empowerment” which was thoroughly researched and very well-written.
The most outstanding aspect was the delivery of her speech, which was achieved with great poise and confidence. Bonnie also showed quick thinking skills in preparing for the impromptu topic in 4 minutes. Her participation in the semi-finals is a matter of great pride for Strathmore Secondary College and an inspiration to students who aspire to hone their skill of public speaking. Mr Bassios and I had the pleasure of working with Bonnie throughout the process and we are very pleased with the outcome.
Congratulations Bonnie!
Hers’s what Bonnie had to say about her experience.
“Competing in the Plain English Speaking Award Competition was an amazing experience. I enjoyed enhancing my speech-crafting skills, meeting like-minded students and speaking on a topic I am passionate about. I would definitely recommend participating in this competition.”

Year 7 STEAM
This semester, our Year 7 STEAM class had a very successful experience learning about sustainable farming.
Our students explored setting up our own Hydroponics and Aquaponics tanks in the classroom, which was an extremely fun hands-on experience!
I really appreciate how hard our groups worked to complete our sustainable farm models, which they presented in our STEAM conference.
Congratulations to all our Year 7s on an amazing semester.

Year 10 Product Design & Technology
Throughout this term our Year 10 Product Design & Technology students have been developing innovative solutions in response to their ‘Illumination’ design brief, implementing their knowledge of the design elements and principles to generate a range of lighting designs.
Introduced to the skill of cold form bending, students worked in groups to successfully laminate and bend plywood into an array of unique forms. Implementing design thinking to manipulate their forms, students were then exposed to the practice of soldering, attaching an LED strip to their final lighting designs.
Well done Year 10 on a strong semester!

Year 10 Ceramics and Sculpture
Year 10 Ceramics and Sculpture students have enjoyed a semester filled with inspiration and artistic growth.
They discovered new technical skills as they were guided through the basics from hand building to wheel throwing. Students used both subtractive and additive clay building techniques to create various pieces while exploring a range of techniques in their treatment of ceramic surfaces. Solidifying their knowledge, students conducted artist studies, and completed sketches documenting the dynamic and rewarding process in their visual diaries.
Their final sculptural masterpiece incorporated clay and wood, carefully considered based on its density, texture and grain pattern.
Congratulations to each of the students for embracing both their boundless creativity and the challenges this wonderful art form presents.

Year 9 Design and Technology Board Games
For our 3D printing task, we were assigned to design and create a multiplayer board game as a group project. Our board game was inspired by Labyrinth’s moving tiles and UNO. We made this game by using technologies such as Tinkercad, 3D printing, and a laser cutter. Our game, Mystic Maze is about wizards trying to escape a magical maze that is constantly moving, the first one to escape the maze wins. The theme of the game is a magical forest, so we decided on making the player characters wizards.
Our thoughts on the project:
“I had a great time making this board game.” -Utsy “We spent long hard hours creating this board game and the outcome was astonishing.” -Eryn “The project was quite enjoyable, and it taught us a lot about teamwork.” -Charlotte “It was fun, and I liked the end product.” -Ahana “I had fun.” -Nisa

This semester in STEAM, students have been exploring the big idea question of how we can utilise technology to track the effects of climate change on ocean ecosystems.
The Year 8s have put their construction skills to the test by making an underwater rover! Students were then given the opportunity to test their ROVs at Coburg Lake Reserve.
Well done STEAM students on a highly reflective term! Excellent ideas were discussed, and creative solutions were presented.
