BYOD

Information for Parents
Strathmore Secondary College strives to create learning environments that are authentic, engaging and improve learning outcomes for all of our students. Our aim is to give our students every advantage educationally for their futures. Technology is an essential part of this endeavour. We believe that the balanced and appropriate use of technology can stimulate interest, increase proficiency and support differentiated learning pathways for our students.
What does a Bring Your Own Device model (BYOD) mean?
Students supply their own device to use at school. They may use a device the family already owns (as long as it fits the requirements listed below) or families have the option to purchase an appropriate device from one of the many retail outlets.The device remains the property of the family and all maintenance and repairs are the responsibility of the family. The school will only provide technical support for issues associated with connecting devices to the school network.
@Schools Email Address
Students will use their "@schools" email address to communicate with teachers and coordinators at the school.
Storage and Security
We recommend that students purchase a high quality lock to store the device in their locker during recess, lunch and other times when it is not in use.
Acceptable Use and Classroom Use Protocols
At the start of the school year, all students will be required to agree to an Acceptable Use Policy and will also be made aware of the Strathmore Secondary College Protocols.
Use of Devices in Class
The College is mindful of not only the technological resources that will engage students in learning but how these activities will improve student outcomes. To this end, it is not expected that the devices will be used in every class, every day. They will be used initially as a substitute for many textbooks and, following that, as required to effectively help students engage in higher order thinking and problem solving. Teachers will make those decisions based on their own knowledge of their field of study and experience with proven and appropriate teaching methodology. Using technology for technology’s sake is not a good application of instructional time or funding, and is unlikely to improve student achievement.
It is expected that all students will bring a device on the first day of school.
Suggested Devices
iPad - current generation (Keyboard required for NAPLAN Year 7 & 9)Microsoft Surface (Windows 10 minimum, Windows 10S not suitable)Android Tablet (not supported for NAPLAN Year 7 & 9)MacBook - macOS version currently supported by ApplePC laptop (Windows 10 minimum, Windows 10S not suitable)
If you are unsure if a device is suitable, please don’t hesitate to contact us at the college and we are happy to provide some guidance. Generally, if the device has an up to date operating system, internet connection and a keyboard (necessary for NAPLAN testing) then it will be suitable. Students also need earphones that are compatible with their device.
Strathmore Secondary College is accredited under the Department of Education CRICOS registration (CRICOS provider name and code: Department of Education, 00861K). For further information refer to www.study.vic.gov.au©2026 Strathmore Secondary College
