Extra Curricular Programs
Music
The music faculty at Strathmore is a thriving community of musicians who are provided with a myriad range of ensembles and extra-curricular opportunities. The cornerstones of our program align with the four tuition streams that we offer from Year 7, namely College Choir, Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band and Guitar Orchestra. To extend and enrich our more advanced students, they are able to audition for Chamber Choir, String Octet, Big Band and Guitar Quartet. These large scale and senior groups are also supported by instrument specific groups, junior ensembles and contemporary style rock and improvisation groups.
Our students all perform in the yearly Mid Year Concert held at The Clocktower Theatre in Moonee Ponds. The college’s Chamber Concert and Jazz Night offer the opportunity for students to perform in smaller ensembles and showcase a more refined performance style. Soirees and school based concerts occur throughout the year in both formal and informal structures. The season culminates in the Creative Arts Day, an open day style celebration of all Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Technology outcomes.

Media & Performing Arts
The areas of performing arts and media are tremendously diverse at Strathmore Secondary College, providing students with a large array of opportunities to get involved and show off their creativity both in and out of the classroom. In addition to the subject specific content offered to students from year 7 through to VCE, there are also several extra-curricular programs that allow further opportunities for students to showcase their talents.
Students can join the film appreciation club, where their passion for film is celebrated and shared between all year levels, forming strong bonds between the senior and junior film enthusiasts. They are also able to attend the annual Mahoney Awards evening which showcases the talents of a selection of Year 12 film projects.
There are several performance evenings throughout the year where drama, dance and theatre studies students are able to present what they have been working on in their respective subjects. It’s a great opportunity for younger students to get an insight into what these subjects involve, to help decide if they want to participate in the future.
Strathmore also offers the opportunity to get involved with the college production which presents either as a large-scale musical or a smaller style play/cabaret event in the alternating years. This allows students to show off their talents in singing, dancing, and acting to peers, family, and the wider community, rehearsing throughout the year and forging strong friendships with all year levels involved.
At the end of the year all these areas come together, combining with music and visual arts to showcase a variety of works in our Creative Arts Open Day, where everyone is welcome to wander through the school and take in a large array of spectacular visual and audio sensations.
LOTE
The LOTE program at SSC provides diverse opportunities across the three languages studied- Italian, Japanese and Greek, to complement and enrich students’ language learning and develop their intercultural capabilities.
These activities include:
Visits to the Immigration museum, consulates, and cultural clubs to broaden their knowledge of the history, traditions and contemporary aspects of Greek/Japanese/Italian society.
Restaurant visits allow students to experience authentic cuisines and apply language learned in real life contexts.
Incursions with visiting overseas groups.
Calligraphy Professor Fukumitsu from Osaka University leads a group of students each year to conduct calligraphy workshops. Strathmore students enjoy their first real calligraphy experience.
Sister School arrangements with schools in Hokkaido, Japan and Bologna, Italy. Reciprocal student exchanges take place, promoting a deeper cultural awareness and understanding.
Students from Akaigawa Junior High School visit annually in August and spend time in various classes while staying at their host student’s home. All Strathmore students who are studying Japanese benefit from speaking to the same generation of native speakers.
Students from Liceo Galvani in Bologna visit in October and are similarly hosted by Strathmore College parents. They participate in a range of activities and excursions with both students and host families.
Biennial Study Tours to Italy and Japan, including a period of home stay with a sister school, for an immersive cultural experience.
A two week Japan Study Tour is organised for senior Japanese students. The tour includes sightseeing in Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima , followed by an exchange programme at the sister school where students experience life in a rural Japanese community.
Italian students can participate in a three week Italy Study Tour which includes visits to major attractions in cities such as Venice, Milan, Florence and Rome. This is followed by a homestay in Bologna with organised excursions to culturally significant sites and other nearby cities and towns.
Humanities
Strathmore Secondary College offers senior students the opportunity to participate in Model United Nations. Students take part in a simulation of the United Nations General Assembly in which students represent Member States of the UN. Students step into the role of country ambassadors and draw on negotiation and diplomacy skills to ensure the views of their country are heard. Students present their ideas and interact with other delegates to discuss global issues - with the aim to find the best solution through dialogue, negotiation and multilateral diplomacy.
The Model UN is an opportunity for students to learn about international relations, the UN system and important global issues, while developing conflict resolution, creative thinking and public speaking skills.
Arts and Technology
Creative Arts and Design showcase day: This event is a celebration of students who are involved in the College’s Creative Arts and Design programs. It showcases music and drama performances by students, as well as their media films and Visual Arts, Visual Communication and Product Design work.
Digital Technology
Digital Technology is an exciting space students are able to explore at Strathmore. Outside of the classroom programs offered, students are able to join the ‘Digi-Tech’ club. This is a co-curricular program which enables students to engage in a wide variety of activities relating to the digital world. These experiences can be treated as an extension of their classroom learning or as stand-alone personal learning opportunities which align with their interests.
Through the Digi-Tech club students are offered the opportunity to participate in the FIRST® LEGO® League competition which engages students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through exciting hands-on learning. The competition sees students gain real-world problem solving experience through a guided, global robotics program which inspires them to experiment and grow their critical thinking, coding, and design skills through hands-on STEM learning and robotics.

Visual Arts & Design
Students are able to explore their creativity through a wide variety of channels at Strathmore. Our extensive classroom offerings are supported by a range of co-curricular activities.
Students can join the ‘Art Club’. This club runs weekly at lunchtimes and is an opportunity for students to learn new skills, practice classroom learnings or simply get creative.
Strathmore Secondary College values providing the community with opportunities to celebrate the creativity of its students. As well as regularly displaying work around the school for the community to enjoy, the College annually holds the Senior Art Exhibition. Open to students in Years 10, 11 and 12, this event offers students the opportunity to experience what it is like to exhibit as a professional artist and have their work displayed in a local public gallery space. The high quality work displayed is a mix of both classroom based projects and personal undertakings.
In addition to the Senior Art Exhibition, the College celebrates students who are involved in the College’s Creative Arts and Design programs in the Creative Arts Open Day. This event showcases music and drama performances by students, as well as their media films and Visual Arts, Visual Communication and Product Design work.

Maths
Maths Help: Maths teachers make themselves available to help students every Tuesday in the Maths Learning Centre (B Block) from 3:00pm – 4:00pm. This is a great place to drop in to complete some homework with help available or to come along with specific questions to get some extra assistance. We also have some groups of students who like to come in and work together on some maths problems on a whiteboard to collaborate and learn together.
Maths Extension Program: Our Maths faculty runs a weekly extension lesson for students in years 9, 11 and 12 across our maths subjects. Students work through challenging problems, giving them an opportunity to engage with ideas beyond what they have encountered, which extends their understanding and builds deep connections.
Australian Maths Competition: Each year we run the Australian Maths Competition (AMC), which is a national competition allowing students to test their maths and problem solving skills against students across the country.
Centre for Higher Education Studies (CHES) Program (Mathematics): We have had several students complete the accelerated program into university level mathematics. These students have been part of the extension programs and year 10 Introduction to Specialist Maths course at Strathmore Secondary College and as a result have been able to successfully complete accelerated university level units as part of their year 12 course.
